I reviewed the last thirty products I purchased on Amazon.
As a beginner, I feel demotivated to write every day. So, to motivate myself I decided to write a product review on Amazon for the last thirty purchases.
Why Amazon product review?
Each online purchase forms a spoken experience in-between the product and the user.
As users get exposed to a product by unboxing, using, or returning, it builds an experience that they express in different conversations with others.
Also, I found that writing product reviews is similar to still-life painting. Where you first measure a shape to draw and later render it to build a scene. A scene that describes the context of an unknown form which is similar to the spoken experience of an unboxed product.
Reviews motivated me to write creatively.
Every user has a story to tell that is captured in reviews of the purchases same as mine. Reading them exposed me to how they speak or convey their thoughts.
This has helped me with writing interesting titles and subtitles to differentiate myself on the same review page whereas forming a structure and organizing my write-up accordingly. I had to be creative yet simplistic while writing reviews which were already populated. In case of none or very few reviews, I got a chance to experiment with more creative writing.
Understand the roles of images and videos.
Some reviews are detailed photos and videos. Which helps in understanding how people describe their purchases with aid of them.
Observing such reviews helped me write with media while making points and building an argument. It helped me, choosing media wisely and building constructive criticism based on my hands-on experience with the same product.
Using simple analytics to improvise
Amazon gives a simple analysis of the impact of your reviews by showing whether others have viewed and found them helpful. This is enough and interesting to know how reviews are working.
Though it may not be a perfect way to analyse, it surely uplifts and motivates you to add more reviews. Further, Amazon also asks questions regularly engaging you to revisit your reviews.
This has helped me understand how my writing works for a general audience and better understand how I should write for a broader audience. Expressing my thoughts while keeping different types of audiences engaged.
Conclusion
Completing this task has helped me more than writing articles and paragraphs from books because it was a mixed bag of motivation due to inconsistent reviews by others and different types of contexts per product per review.
Which improved my pace, articulation and consistency in writing frequently. So much so that I had to be creative while writing on dishwasher detergent review to thoughtfully reviewing a Casio watch. All in all, it’s a fun exercise which I would suggest new writers can engage in.
